stephen lawra

VARSITY HEAD COACH

Coach Larwa is in his second season as head Coach for the Knights volleyball program. Stephen Larwa came to Independence High School from Richardson Berkner High School where he was the Had Volleyball coach and Business teacher for the last 14 years. 

Larwa began his coaching career at Skyline Juniors Volleyball Club 22 years ago as one of the founding members. In his coaching tenure, he has worked with all ages from 11s through the college athlete. Along with coaching volleyball, he is also a certified official for USAV working both local and national tournaments.

Born in Buffalo, NY and raised in a military family Larwa moved 9 times until he graduated from Friendswood High School located just south of Houston, TX. After high school, he attended Texas A&M University earning a BBA in Finance. It was at Texas A&M where his love of volleyball began while playing middle, right side, and setter positions for the university. Through his playing career he achieved numerous MVP, All-conference, and All Tournament awards. After graduating A&M he worked for Fidelity Investments at a call center in Dallas for 5 years. He soon attended UTD to earn an MBA in teaching.

He is the proud parent of a 10 year old son Ryder. For fun Coach Larwa continues to stay active by playing soccer, ice hockey, and volleyball.
